one. whiplash memorial _wip

Snaking through Whiplash Memorial – and North Kensington where Max Ferguson grew up – is the Westway. This section of the A40 is a memorial to a failed modernist experiment to ring central London in raised concrete flyovers. Entire streets were demolished to make way for it, and as part of the regeneration of the empty land around it, social housing, including Grenfell Tower, was built. Whiplash Memorial weaves together personal and collective histories by combining two decades of photographs and texts by Max with found and archive materials. It is a cryptic love letter to the Westway and the community beneath it.

This was work was first began as part of an artist collective Figure.8 that Max co-founded. It was first exhibited at their work-in-progress groups show at Campbell Works in London in 2024

Whiplash Memorial was awarded the innaugral IC Visual Lab New Makers prize and exhibted at their gallery in Bristol as a solo exhibtion in 2025.

It was also selected for a solo show at KOPPEL Collective in January 2026.

Each of these exhibition had public events, talks and workshops to maximise the community engagement and impact.

two. the tower block _wip

The London College of Communication tower block building was opened in 1964. Since then tens of thousands of students have studied there. Bunked off there. Smoked cigarettes, and hopefully learned something, there. In 2027 LCC moves to a new building. Across the road. On the site of the now demolished Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre. These are some of the last students who will use the iconic old building.

This work was selected this year for display at London's leading photography festival, Peckham24. It received press in national news, including the Guardian.

The project is made collaboratively with the students: they choose how they want to be photographed, art-direct each other, and have final say on which images I use.

The short video here was included in Peckham24 and is the first time I've used moving image in an exhibition.
